DIXON FAMILY SERVICES’ COMEDY NIGHT IS POSTPONED

DIXON FAMILY SERVICES WILL CONTINUE TO PROVIDE NEEDED SERVICES DURING COVID-19 CRISIS

COMMUNITY SUPPORT IS APPRECIATED

Dear Community,

With the new guidelines we all have been asked to follow, Dixon Family Services has no choice but to postpone our annual event, Comedy Night, originally scheduled for April 17.  We had been holding out hope that the virus counts would stop rising and related restrictions might be lifted in time for mid-April, but as of this weekend, the new rule is that any gatherings of 50 or more over the next 8 weeks must be postponed or cancelled.

We are optimistic that the virus situation will end soon, especially now that we are all doing our parts to lessen its spread.   After we get the OK to have gatherings again, we will pick another date, perhaps in summer, for Comedy Night but that is all up in the air right now.  We would love to announce a new date, but given all that is involved in having an event like Comedy Night, it will be some time before we are able to set a new date.  We appreciate everyone’s patience and your continued support of Dixon Family Services.

At this time we must focus on the services we can provide to help people in our community affected by the Covid-19 crisis.  For many people living paycheck to paycheck, right now is a critical time for the types of services we can provide.

In addition to our normal resources for providing basic needs and referrals to benefits available, we may soon also be working with FEMA to provide rental assistance to those affected by Corona virus and in need of assistance at this time.  We will post any updates about that as things progress in that regard.

At this time we are expecting our clientele to expand to people who have never needed any type of assistance before because there are so many of us, unfortunately , that can be so negatively affected by missing one paycheck, and it is highly likely that many will miss several paychecks in this Corona Virus situation.

As always, and especially now, we can use financial donations so that we can continue to provide services to people in Dixon living at or below poverty.  Feel free to send in a donation at any time to DFS 155 N. 2nd Street, or use Pay Pal on our website www.dixonfamilyservices.org to donate with a credit card.

Now more than ever we all need to keep in touch with loved-ones and neighbors, especially if they are older and more vulnerable due to existing medical conditions or other weaknesses.  Reach out to ask people you care about how they are doing.  If you are going to the store, ask others if they would like you to pick up some items for them as well.

Dixon Family Services can take calls and emails from people asking for resources for themselves or their loved-ones.  If you or someone you know is unsure of what social services are available, we are happy to help.  Often times the help that people are seeking is available right here under our Dixon Family Services roof.  If not, we can refer people in the right direction.  Feel free to give people our number 707 678-0442 (leave a message with a good number to call back if we do not answer) or email us at info@dixonfamilyservices.org

On behalf of the Dixon Family Services staff, board and most importantly, the people we serve, THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT!

Sincerely, Cookie Powell

Letter to the Community

Dear Friends of Dixon Family Services,

Download “Letter to the Community”

We recognize that this is the busiest time of the year for most people and that a task such as responding to a donation request letter can easily be set aside or lost in a pile of similar requests from many other organizations.  We know, because it is our busiest time of year too.  Many people living in poverty seek our assistance in the wintertime.

We want to remind you about our recent request sent out in the fall 2019, as well as to remind you that when you give to Dixon Family Services you are helping us to help families in need right here in our own community of Dixon.

This letter is not to pester you, but as a friendly reminder that there is still time to make a charitable, tax-deductible donation to us before the end of the year.  You can send a check to DFS, 155 North Second Street, Dixon, CA 95620 or conveniently use your credit card and PayPal on our website, www.DixonFamilyServices.org

For your tax purposes, our non-profit tax identification number is 68-0041829

You have been generous to our organization before and it is our sincere hope that you will continue to help us in our mission to improve lives and to keep children safe, healthy and thriving.  We need your support now more than ever.

Thank you so much for your consideration and for your kindheartedness.

We wish you and your family the Happiest of Holidays.

Sincerely from, Everyone at Dixon Family Services!!

PS

We hope that you will also act as an advocate and refer people you know to us if they are experiencing hard times.  Ask them to call Dixon Family Services at 707-678-0442 and we will do our best to help them solve their problems.

We could not do all we do without the help and support from our community.

Some facts about Dixon Family Services:

People in Dixon consider Dixon Family Services as an information and referral agency that can give them phone numbers, website addresses and other contact information for a wide variety of human services programs and other organizations that have the resources they need.  We also have lists of resources on our website for job search, veteran’s services, homeless services and many other support systems.  If we do not have what someone is looking for, we do research and get back to them with what we find.

We are here to provide basic needs services to families who are struggling to make ends meet.  Our case managers do complete assessments with clients to find areas that can be addressed to move them closer to self-reliance.  Action plans are created with specific goals and steps.  Budgets and savings plans are often key activities.  Employment development is another.  Financial support for rent, utilities, food and other basic needs can sometimes be attained with the assistance of case managers who will apply to basic needs programs on behalf of the client.

The DFS Food Pantry provides emergency food bags to families and individuals, supplemental groceries to families in DFS programs as well as a Holiday Food Distribution in December.

We also provide counseling for substance abuse, depression, anger management, marital /partnership problems, domestic violence, child abuse and other behavioral health issues.

In addition to the services and programs that we provide at Dixon Family Services, there are co-located partners who also provide much-needed supportive services such as the WIC Program, the Cal-Works Program, Cal Fresh/Food Stamps, Medi-Cal, Legal Services, Food Bank Produce Truck and other programs that people in Dixon would otherwise have to travel to other cities to access.

Dixon Family Services has been providing preventative and supportive services to residents of Dixon and the surrounding rural areas since 1984.  We are a non-government, non-profit 501-c-3 that relies on the generosity of the community, businesses, foundations and fund raising efforts and events.

Dixon Family Services Is Thankful For a Supportive Community

We all start to think about what we are thankful for at this time of year and one of many things that makes me happy and proud to live in Dixon is people helping people. We care about our friends and families, but also have enough kindness left over to help our neighbors and the community at large. In my job, as an advocate for those who do not have much, I notice the charity and compassion from people who are fiscally comfortable and self-reliant enough to be able to help those less fortunate.

In 2018 and 2019 I wrote several letters, reports and articles to alert community members that Dixon Family Services (DFS) was financially insecure for the first time in many years. Historically at least one-third of our organization’s annual operating budget has come from government contracts or grants (City, County, State, Federal, First 5 Tobacco Taxes, Etc.). When Solano County Health and Social Services and First 5 Solano reduced and ended support of Family Resource Centers (FRCs) in 2018 and 2019 it was a big blow to the expected revenue of all FRCs in Solano County, including DFS.

The other two-thirds of budget revenue is typically generated from fundraising events, such as Comedy Night, donations and grants, such as the ones we receive from Kaiser Permanente, Genentech, Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation, Solano Community Foundation and other non-government foundations. We also receive donations from many local businesses, churches, service organizations as well as numerous generous individuals.

Good news is that people heard our pleas for help to sustain Dixon Family Services. Many of those who have been long-time supporters increased the amounts of their giving and our list of supporters grew with at least a dozen new partners. Comedy Night 2019 was our most profitable yet because of generous sponsorships and the hard work of our Board of Directors. We look forward to forming many new relationships and partnerships in the future that will enable us to do more for the people we serve.

At DFS we offer Family Case Management, Basic Needs Safety Net Services, Mental Health and Substance Abuse Counseling, Parenting Workshops and Peer Support Groups amongst other services and programs. The most highly requested service on a daily basis is for Information and Referrals. Many people on our phone or walking through our doors are in need of help for the first time in their lives and do not know where to start, who to call, or how to go about accessing benefits, healthcare and other basic necessities. We can often help with one or more of our services and can also refer to one of our co-located partners. If we do not have a particular resource at DFS, we take the time to research and find out where people can get the help they need.

We are pleased to report that we will continue serving families in need without government funding for now. We could not do this without the wonderful support from kind and caring citizens of Dixon. Our sustained organization is a testament to people helping people in their own community through their local non-profit social services organization, Dixon Family Services, Dixon’s Family Resource Center.

We do, however, hold hope that we will again apply for and get government funding for programs, whether from our own City of Dixon, County of Solano or State of California to increase resources for families in Dixon. Our operations have been pared down to make ends meet and keep the lights on here at DFS. We have left some open positions unfilled. Our frugality will persist and our smaller staff will continue to stretch itself, but it will be wonderful to get back to a full week with a full staff so that we can better serve people struggling to meet their basic needs.

As I reported in August, at least 14% of people in Dixon are living at or below poverty level. Also from the report: While we tightened our budget and reduced hours we persevered in helping many people in need. In Fiscal Year 18/19 there were 2,330 total DFS program appointments or sessions, 508 calls or emails from people seeking information and referrals for themselves or their loved ones, 239 served in mental health, behavioral health or peer support groups. Of the total served, 59 were veterans or family of veterans, 73 families were helped with their rent or utility bills, 228 were provided with food bags from the DFS Pantry and 23 families or individuals were homeless.

Other good news that keeps us hopeful is that State Bill 436 was recently signed into law. This is a very positive achievement that resulted from a long period of work and collaboration by many partners, including Dixon Family Services and other Solano County FRCs. The new law gives rightful recognition to the vital importance of community-based Family Resource Centers, opens doors for additional resources and plans for more support for low-income families struggling in California. We will keep the community updated about funding that may result from SB 436. We do not expect to realize new government funding right away but are hopeful that by fiscal year 2020/2021 we will.

Also in the good news category is that Dixon Family Services recently received generous support by way of grants from Kaiser Permanente, Genentech and Solano Community Foundation. Their financial support demonstrates their trust in us and belief in the good work we do. We are so happy to announce that this year our Mental Health Continuum of Care Program is again being supported by Kaiser with a $19,985 grant award from their Community Benefits Program. Also, our Safety Net Program continues to be supported by Genentech with a grant for $15,000. And this year for the first time ever a grant was made available for Operations Expenses, by The Solano Community Foundation. Our application was successful and they awarded DFS $7,467 to cover a percentage of operating expenses such as utilities, phone, copies, office supplies, postage and other costs of running our small non-profit business. Our total operations budget is annually approximately $34,000 and does not include wages or other payroll expenses. The gift from Solano Community Foundation is the first of its kind, very much appreciated, and we hope to see more similar opportunities to ask for grants to support operations expenses in the future.

And again I am so thankful for people in our community who are helping us cut back on expenses, such as the Girl Scouts who are currently hosting a postage stamp drive to try to reduce the expense of that budget item. Or there are Aaron and Kyle came and fixed our old air conditioner for free. Then there are also our friends, Patty and Mark, who have made it their mission that DFS will not run out of copy paper, toilet paper or paper towels as long as they have their Costco membership. And Ron and Mary who donate a check for $2,000 each year because they trust we will put the money to good use. There are so many illustrations of generosity that helps us keep our doors open at DFS. These are just a few examples. It warms my heart that so many people want to be part of our mission to improve lives.

So these are a few of the things I am thankful for at this time of year. The holidays are upon us and most of us will find joy in the season. Thoughts of family gathered around, eating a bounty of food, cozy and warm inside and playing games into the night always put a big smile on my face.

But sadly this time of year is also when low-income families struggle the most. Recent years of rising housing costs have had a severe impact and in the cold winter months the increased need for utilities, food, medicines and clothing causes additional strains on family budgets as well as psychological and emotional stressors on their minds.

With a financial contribution to DFS you have the power to help us make a difference in the lives of children and families in your own community. When you are thinking about making a charitable tax-deductible year-end donation we ask that you consider keeping it local. Your support is needed now more than ever and can positively affect a family in your neighborhood, a co-worker, friend or even a relative that can benefit from one or more of our many programs and services.

On Behalf of Everyone at Dixon Family Services, HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!

A Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,

Dixon Family Services and I recently lost a very good friend, volunteer and long-time supporter, Ben Romero.  I attended his services and the funeral home was packed with many friends, family and fellow members of the Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.  The evening Rosary and service went overtime because so many people got up to share their memories of Ben and the reasons they all loved him so much.  Lightheartedly several pointed out that Ben would have been upset because he was always adamant about starting a meeting on time and ending on time.  This I witnessed myself for the years he took the lead role of the Advocates for Dixon Seniors and coordination of the annual Senior Resource Fair.

The next morning’s Mass was also highly attended by people who knew and loved Ben.  Hearing everyone’s fond memories and comments about Ben, I realized that all of his attributes that I admired were many of the other people’s reasons for their love and respect of the man.  I remember Ben saying “Work Smarter, Not Harder”, “Why pay someone to do what you’re capable of doing yourself” and to “Always behave and do your work as if someone is watching, because someone is, God sees all.”

Ben was such a smart man and a Jack of All Trades.  For this reason, when recognized as Citizen of the Year by the Dixon Chamber of Commerce he became known as the “Man of Many Hats.”  No matter what the situation may be, Ben was always the first one to step up and ask what he could do to help.

Ben was a mentor to me as well as many others during his lifetime, always happy to teach his self-taught skills to others, a model of professionalism, high ethics and positivity.  I never met another person that could see any situation for the silver linings as he could.  Ben was very encouraging to me when I needed it most.  Among many other wonderful acts of kindness, Ben helped my children and I through the adult catechism RCIA Program and then sponsored my son as he was confirmed into the Catholic Church.

I have many fond memories of Ben and I take comfort in knowing that he will not be forgotten.  He made a lasting impression on everyone in his family and circle of friends.

In a final act of kindness and show of support for Dixon Family Services, Ben strongly suggested that he preferred people make donations to our organization rather than buy flowers for his funeral.  Many people did as he asked and I know that would make him very happy.  He is up in Heaven smiling down on us all and I am sure that he is one of God’s best helpers.

Ben Romero will be missed by his loved ones and many people who were lucky enough to know him, and that includes me and my family.  Rest in Peace My Friend!

Sincerely, Cookie Powell
